Gohatto
(Taboo)
Release year: 1999
Country: Japan
A young, extraordinarily handsome
new recruit brings destruction to his group of samurai in 1860s
Osaka. His beauty inflames the desire and defeats the
will of every member of his militia. Though its title
is Taboo, one of the many strange, surprising things about the
movie is how freely its characters speak of homosexuality.
Director Oshima has created a highly stylized world of smoke
and shadows, bathed in a perpetual golden glow, and like a mist
it wraps itself around us and seals us in.
