Lavender
Release year: 2000
Country: Hong Kong

OK, so this is not a perfect movie. But who would not love to have Kaneshiro Takeshi come crashing through their roof, wings or no wings? Eason Chan is Chow Chow, the gay boy next door who is eager to show the heavenly creature Kaneshiro that there are lots of people who would be willing to love him, and would not mind paying either! This plot twist could have been silly, but both Chan and Takeshi bring and innocence and compaction to the subject. I especially like the scene where Angel tells a depressed and guilt ridden Chow Chow not to worry about being attracted to him, because Gay people will be in heaven too! Kelly Chan gives a fine performance as a woman who has given up on love ever since her boyfriend died. There was 15 minutes of bull, and I mean this literally as well as figuratively, that the film could have done without, but over all this is a quite charming and hopelessly romantic film.

The Legend Of The Blue Wolves
Release year:

Country:  Japan

2199 A.D. - The human race's problems in overpopulation and resource distribution has heightened to a degree that forced them to adapt to environments outside their own. They formed a network of colonies inside the vast solar system, which in turn, changed not only their habits but their flesh as well. For 100 years after this, the human race thrived and lived in glory. They did not anticipate that a time would come when all of it would end. The day that the humans marched into Pluto was the day that they met up with a group known as the Apocalypse. Dark and mysterious, the Apocalypse was only known for the frightening fact that they would assimilate humans into their own mechanical bodies, disposing of the victim's flesh and keeping only his brain as its source of knowledge and energy. A battle begins at Ganymede, one of Jupiter's moons. 2nd lieutenant Jonathan Tyberius prepares himself to stand in the front line as he remembers a promise that he must deliver to one Leonard Schteinberg. He sits back, committing to memory the beauty of Leonard's face and the brief waking moment before tragedy struck and pulled them apart. Thus begins Jonathan's story…
Legend of the Blue Wolves deserves applause for being one of the rare yaoi hentai that boasts of detailed private parts. Of course, there's the standard Japanese censorship, but you can still see the genitals underneath that annoying blurry cloud.

The Let It Be
Release year: 2000
Country:  Hong Kong

Dog food salesman Lau Ching constantly cheats on his meek wife, Shun, and is especially happy when his doctor buddy sets him up with gorgeous Lui Chung-nam. Infatuated with his latest conquest, Ching quickly decides to divorce his wife but, unable to do so, instead brings Chung-nam home as his concubine. He then goes away for a few days to indulge in even more adultery, leaving the two women alone. Ching returns to find that Chung-nam has seduced Shun and that the two have become lovers. Now it's Ching who is about to get dumped and he is desperate to put things back the way they were. Given HK cinema's track record when it comes to presenting gay themes and characters, it is unwise to expect anything particularly innovative but LET IT BE fails to even offer anything meaningful or amusing about relationships period, gay or straight.

The Level C
Release year: 2002
Country:  Japan

This is an interesting concept and works. Mizuki is a popular male fashion model with a promising future. When the mysterious Haruno sees him, she wants to make him the centerpiece for her company's latest promotion. To lure Mizuki in, she calls on the talents of her twin brother, Kazo. He is quick to seduce the young supermodel, but things soon escalate beyond business as usual. As Kazo's feelings run away with him, it looks like true love for him and Mizuki. The "yaoi" affair stuff between the two is good, honest, and tastefully done.
