News and Past Events
23 May 2004, 1 PM: We had a big going-away party for three friends of LY-Chicago who are moving out of state at Las Palmas, 1150 E. Ogden Avenue, Naperville.
01 May 2004: We had a fun Thai New Year celebration at New Pot Thai Restaurant, 727 Lake Street, Oak Park. New Pot has great reviews: Centerstage, Metromix. Oak Park is easily accessible. It's a great place to spend the afternoon downtown, or visit the Frank Lloyd Wright historic site.
Driving: Eisenhower Expressway to Harlem (Route 43), then north to Lake
Street, and right (east) to restaurant (on south side of street). Parking
structure is just south of restaurant.

Sun 25 Apr 2004: Fifteen people enjoyed the Japanese seafood buffet at Todai restaurant in Schaumburg. It was a fun mixed crowd, including Chinese, Korean, Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese friends both singles and couples. Due to the chilly and windy weather, the group went to the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory (instead of the Chicago Botanic Garden) and had a great time!
Sat 20 Mar 2004: Potluck dinner, movie, and karaoke (it was inevitable with this group of guys :-). We all had a good time! There was some great home-made food -- Chinese-spiced pork leg, chicken with Filipino seasoning, pasta, jambalaya, and apple pie. Some of us can even sing pretty well, in fact, one couple went home and downloaded karaoke software and 250 songs! We did enjoy watching the classic movie "Lan Yu" on DVD. Later, five of the guys went to the city for some late-night fun. Special thanks to our hosts Omar and Jimmy for hosting this event.
Sun 14 Mar 2004: What a feast at Todai Japanese seafood buffet in Schaumburg!
Sun 22 Feb 2004: We had a great time at the hors d'oeuvre party in Addison. Thanks to Sam for hosting this event and providing chicken salad, baked chicken, Chinese vegetables, meatballs, and beverages. Thanks to the rest of the boys who brought snacks and dessert, and to Ricoh for bringing two enjoyable movies.
Sat 24 Jan 2004: Joint Chinese New Year party with Asians and Friends Chicago
Wed 31 Dec 2003: New Year's Eve party. We had a huge feast and watched Cher's farewell concert DVD. Thanks to Sam for hosting this event!
05 Dec 2003: Geneva Christmas Walk
Thu 27 Nov 2003: LYC-Chicago provided a traditional homemade Thanksgiving goose dinner. Guests brought an appetizer or dessert to share. We enjoyed the company of many new friends representing Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Poland, England, and the USA.
Sat 01 Nov 2003: Special thanks to Jimmy and Omar for inviting Long Yang Club-Chicago to their Halloween costume party. This was truly a terrific event with over 80 joyful people in attendance. The costumes were fabulous and the great prizes made two dozen people winners.
Sat 04 Oct 2003: We had beautiful weather for our visit to the Long Grove Apple Fest. We enjoyed visiting antique and gift shops, watching "Elvis" perform, and listening to live Dixieland music!
Sun 14 Sep 2003: The LYC "country cousins" journeyed to the North Side to visit our "city cousins" AFC for a summer BBQ. It was great to meet so many new people!
28 Aug-1 Sep 2003: This year's International Friendship Weekend in Pittsburgh was a lot of fun! We got reacquainted with old friends, and made many more. The highlight of the trip was a moving religious commitment ceremony for five couples, one of which had been together for 35 years! Special thanks to Asians and Friends (Pittsburgh) for hosting this event, and for planning IFW 2004 in Philadelphia!
Sun 24 Aug 2003: We met at Busse Woods Forest Preserve for the annual All Groups Picnic with our friends from West Suburban Gays, BUNGALO, Chicago Prime Timers, Lincoln Park Lagooners, and other area groups. The water-balloon and egg toss games, volleyball, and croquet, were great fun. The weather was perfect. About 90 people attended.
Sun 10 Aug 2003: This month's restaurant outing was at the highly-rated Gaylord Fine Indian Cuisine restaurant, 555 Mall Drive, Schaumburg. We met at noon for the lunchtime buffet ($8.95). Restaurant phone: (847) 619-3300.
Sun 27 Jul 2003: We had a terrific time at our back-yard BBQ in Bartlett! The Chinese, Vietnamese, and Filipino cuisine, and traditional BBQ was delicious. We dodged the raindrops while playing volleyball, badminton and Frisbee. Independent filmmaker John Swanson showed the trailer from his new horror movie "Unearthly Harvest". We'll show the entire film at our Halloween costume party. A special thank-you goes to our hosts Wally and Chris.
Sun 13 Jul 2003: Our favorite Dim Sum in Chinatown is the Three Happiness Chinese Restaurant, 2130 South Wentworth Avenue, Chicago, IL 60616. We had a great brunch and met some terrific new friends. From there we visited shops in Chinatown where one of the group purchased a nice lamp. Then, it was on to Navy Pier for ice cream, a walk in Olive Park, hanging out by the shore, a lakefront boat tour, and a tasty Mexican dinner.
Sun 22 Jun 2003: We had our first Asian pot-luck dinner on Sunday June 22nd. Gregory and Ravi graciously opened their home to LYC-Chicago for this event thanks, guys!! Guests brought a variety of salads, main courses, and desserts, and enjoyed meeting many new people.
26 May 2003: Paris was wonderful! For those of you who could not make it, you missed a terrific event!! The members of Long Yang Club-Paris put on an event that people will be talking about for years. The food was great, the camaraderie wonderful, and the wine and champagne terrific. Many new friends were made, and we were happy to see so many friends from all over the world who we met at past iCON and IFW events.
Sun 18 May 2003: Everyone enjoyed the Japanese seafood buffet at Todai. The restaurant is in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, and has its own entrance adjacent to the lower-level (west) J.C. Penney entrance of Woodfield mall.
Todai is an upscale All-You-Can-Eat Japanese Seafood Buffet Restaurant. Each restaurant features a 160-foot seafood buffet counter with 40 different kinds of sushi, over 15 dishes are served at both the salad bar and hot entree island, and a dessert bar with over 20 different cakes and fruits. Dinner prices on weekends are $25-$30. Todai is very popular and we will undoubtedly meet there again. For more information, please visit http://www.todai.com.
04 May 2003: We had a great dinner yesterday at New Pot Thai Restaurant, 727 Lake Street, Oak Park. The larger-than-expected turn-out included Indian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and (of course :-) Caucasian people from Cook, DuPage, and Lake County. One handsome guy came in from Indiana!
The restaurant was very accommodating for our group. The tea, appetizers, and entrιes were great, and we stayed on gabbing for over 2 ½ hours. We recommend this restaurant, and, given the central location, public transportation, and free parking just behind the venue, we will likely visit again.
During the dinner we got to meet several new people. We gave out business cards to share with friends, and social event surveys to help us find out what people like to do. Some great suggestions came in for restaurant events, pot-luck dinners, and outings. The Organizing Committee is worked out the details of the next several events.
15 Apr 2003: The small all-volunteer organizing team has been quietly working behind the scenes for you. There are several accomplishments to report (not the least of which is successful filing of our income tax forms :-)
The organizational meeting in February was a success, with participation from Korean, Vietnamese, and Caucasian singles and couples. Please read the minutes for all the details.
The Organizing Committee has registered Long Yang-Chicago with the U.S. government as a social organization. This preserves the name at a national level. Thanks goes to John N. for his foresight on this issue.
