Trip to the film festival

There are three films about gay and lesbian life, set in the Caribbean, the US and India, showing at the Academy Theatre at 12.30 pm.

The Pink Mirror
A clash of East and West.

The Pink Mirror is an entertaining and colourful look into the Indian closet in over the top Bollywood style. Two clever Indian drag queens compete with a westernised gay teenager in a battle to win a handsome hunk. Who will win?The film is in Hindi with English subtitles.

Paradise Lost 24 mins

A dreamy journey through gay and lesbian life in Trinidad and Tobago.

For Straights Only 22 mins
In many Asian cultures, marriages are arranged by parents. It is not OK to be gay! What is it like to come out? One Indian man says, “I had to say ‘I’m Gay’ in English… I couldn’t find any phrase in my own language that meant the same.”

NOTE: Films in the festival are often very popular. The theatre may be full. It would be a good idea to phone the Academy Cinema (09) 373 2761 and make a booking, so you can be sure to get a seat. They will hold tickets until 20 minutes before the film starts. (If you don’t pick up the ticket before then, they will sell it to someone else.) Tickets cost $13.

We are going to meet in the coffee bar in the theatre at 12 noon. If you haven’t been able to book a ticket, you may be able to buy one then. (And if you haven’t had time to eat, you can get something to eat then too!)

The Academy Theatre is underground, in the same building as the main City Library, between AUT and the Queen St.

Italian National Day

We had been planning to celebrate this on 5th June. However we have now decided to put it off to the 19th. Peter and Paul have invited us to join to their home.

We are going to watch an Italian movie, Mambo Italiano. (It has English subtitles.) A couple of the committee have seen it, and say it’s really good!
There will not be enough chairs for everyone, so if you don’t want to sit on the floor, bring a folding chair, a beanbag or a cushion to sit on.

We suggest you may like to bring Italian food - cheese, pizza, pasta, olives, foccaccia bread, salami, spaghetti, or a plate of antipasto (a selection of all of these) - if you can. If you want to feel really Italian, you could bring some Italian wine. The raffle prize will be a bottle of Chianti.

Peter and Paul live at 46 Benchmark Drive, Massey. Benchmark Drive is off Royal Road in Massey. It’s very easy to get to. From the city, it’s ten minutes on the northwest motorway (highway 16) to Royal Rd. When you get off the motorway, turn right at Royal Road, and Benchmark Drive is the first road on the right. It’s the last house on the right down the drive at number 46. (Look for the balloons!) If you need transport, phone Nigel at 2797177.

Note: there is no parking on the road outside the house. However it is a very short walk from the shops just before Benchmark Drive. You can also park further down Benchmark Drive.

You can find out more about the movie from www.mamboitalianomovie.com

Changes of personnel

Remember our visit to Miranda Hot Springs on Sunday (and possibly to Hunua Falls and Cossey’s Dam).

HAVE YOU CONTACTED NIGEL SO HE CAN ARRANGE TRANSPORT?

The Steering Committee has met once a month, and for all of us there have been jobs to do between meetings too. We are sad that Rod Harmer has felt unable to continue giving up the time needed. However we have been delighted to have had offers from a couple of other members to help us, and we are hoping to take up those offers in the near future. If anyone else feels able to help, or would like to attend a meeting, please contact me.
